We are very sad to learn of the passing of a valued contributor, Brian Slocock, who died this week after a long illness. A Senior Lecturer in Political Science at the University of Paisley, Brian was a dedicated researcher who in retirement committed his energies over several years to human rights work on Syria, and his insights were greatly appreciated by a community of journalists and activists.
Brian’s work for Syria Notes included the following articles:
- Command responsibility
On Assad regime officers named at the UN Security Council, from the Autumn 2018 issue of Syria Notes. - Syria’s secret police: the Mukhabarat
On Assad’s torture chiefs, from the 9 October 2017 issue. - The Caesar photographs
Notes on an event in Parliament presenting evidence of systematic torture and murder in Syrian prisons, from our first issue in November 2015.
The funeral will take place at Chester Crematorium, Chester CH1 5BB, at 2pm on Tuesday 30th April. Brian asked for no flowers, but suggested donations to Médecins Sans Frontières in his name.
